Mascara

The #1 can’t leave the house without it makeup item would have to be mascara. Even if you don’t wear foundation, can’t be bothered with lip gloss, are not interested in sunscreen, you’ve got to wear mascara. There, I’ve said it.

I have to admit I went years without wearing mascara. It used to irritate my eyes and I figured my lashes were fairly dark so it didn’t really matter. Wrong! I’ve now learned that mascara is essential and unless you pick up some cheap and nasty 50 cent mascara, your eyes shouldn’t be irritated. Mascara makes your eye lashes look longer, more prominent, and your eyes look stunning. Fact.

My favorite mascara is no longer in production. I was horrified to discover this so as soon as I found out I went around to all the beauty shops in my city and bought every remaining one I could find. I still have around 10 in my cupboard. True story.

So yeah, I love mascara. :)

Lip Gloss

The days of lipstick are long gone. I haven’t worn lipstick in years. Lip gloss and lip balm are the way to go, in my opinion. They are light, simple, and pretty. Clear, nude, and light pink lip glosses suit just about everyone so it’s just a matter of picking up a gloss that lasts long and which doesn’t have that sticky feel about it.

When buying lip gloss, it’s important to consider the type of applicator involved. There are the small tube type lip glosses where you apply a little and then smooth it over your lips using your finger. This is probably the least effective way to apply gloss. There are lip glosses which come with a wand applicator – pretty standard stuff really. I like glosses which a built in brush applicator but you don’t seem them around that often. Sephora lip gloss has that type of applicator. Lastly, there are solid glosses which come in a little tub like with lip balm and you apply this type of gloss with your finger. Not very hygienic if you ask me.

Eye Shadow

A neutral or light eye shadow is more than enough to wear to work or when out during the day. For the evening, go crazy with dark, smoky eyes, or the seasons hottest colors like, sea green, or bright blue. Matt or sparkly, it doesn’t matter, what counts is that you have a bit of fun with your eyes and draw attention to them, your eyes are the windows to the soul, after all.

If you like to play around with eye color, one of the multi-color palettes are a great idea. The palette sizes range from about 40 different colors to 120. These are not only fun to have in your makeup kit but they make a great gift too.

On the other hand, if you just want the latest, most fashionable colors, pick single eye shadows or small two or three color shadows. The single colors are also good if you just have one or two colors you love to use. Sephora are great if you want affordable but fashionable eye shadow.

Foundation

If you are young and/or have great skin, then you don’t really need to wear foundation, a light powder should be enough. For the rest of us though, foundation is pretty much a must. There are a gazillion different foundations to choose from but the most popular these days seems to be mineral foundation – and with good reason. Mineral foundation is great for giving a natural look but still giving enough coverage to hide acne, redness, and other blemishes. You can use a really light application or go a bit heavier if you need to. It’s a very versatile foundation which suits all skin types.

Choosing the right foundation is all about choosing the right colour. You really need to test the color on your face before you buy. Pick a color which matches exactly your skin color, not a shade darker or lighter, which will give you a natural, flawless effect. If you tend to get a tan in the summer, don’t forget to select a new foundation to suit your tanned skin. Of course, it goes without saying that we recommend you wear sunscreen all year long to prevent tanning/sun damage, but do as you please.

Moisturizer

After cleansing and toning, the next step is moisturizing. Finding a good face cream is extremely important as with the wrong cream your skin will look oily or flaky or even worse, you might break out in spots.

If you have oily or combination skin, a light oil free moisturizer is probably enough. La Roche-Posey have some really nice mattifying creams which work well with this skin type and that is what I use. I can’t recommend this brand highly enough. Their products work well and are very affordable.

On the other hand, if you have dry skin or are a little older, you would probably be better off with a heavier, richer face cream, especially at night.

After moisturizing in the morning, don’t forget to apply sunscreen to protect your skin during the day or try a moisturizer with added sunscreen (SPF 30+ is good) like the Olay Professional day cream.
